Effect of Calcium Ion in Nutrient Solution on the Content and Composition of Essential Oil of Sweet Basil in Hydroponics

Abstract
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of different calcium concentrations (2, 4.5, 9, and 13 mmol¡¤L^(-1)) on the content of essential oil and the yield of essential oil of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) in hydroponics. The increase of calcium concentration in nutrient solution resulted in a remarkable lowering of the growth, but a considerable increase of the essential oil content of sweet basil. The yield of essential oil of sweet basil incresaed only in 2 and 4.5 mmol¡¤L^(-1) of the calcium concentration in nutrient solution and tended to decrease significantly in 9 and 13 mmol¡¤L^(-1) of that. Linalool content in basil showed a tendency to be less with a increase of calcium concentration in nutrient solution, but in contrast to linalool content in basil oil the content of eugenol was much more with increased concentration of calcium in nutrient solution. The content of sesquiterpene exhibited also a increasing tendency with more calcium concentration in nutrient solution.
